“I lived in the home management house the summer of 1957.  It was a very hot summer.  I have many wonderful memories of that time.  I was an only child so living in a house with other “siblings” was a new experience for me.  How to budget, spend time wisely, and cook for more than three people were some of the things I learned.

Making oatmeal cookies was one of the things each of us did that summer.  Every time I have made those cookies since then, I have thought about the home management house and the fun we all had.” – Dorothy Godwin George, ’58 BSHE

“My good friend and her husband came over from Atlanta to visit with me on a Saturday before he left for military service.  They also went to the ball game and invited me to go with them. I had to decline the offer as I was ‘the cook’ that week.

My roommate secretly married and in those days you were dismissed from school if caught.  They decided they would each tell one person.  And you guess it – I was the one.  After seeing the marriage license I was a wreck and think I was more worried than the bride knowing this!!!” – Mary Pat Fortson, ’62 BSHE, ’64 MSHE

“My favorite memory was the ‘problems’ that the professors would give us to deal with.  It was like a game to show them we could adapt!  Sometimes a student would come to the house and an important appliance would be mysteriously ‘out of order’...or a student would all of a sudden have less money to spend than they thought they would have...in my case, I had a surprise guest to come that I hadn't planned for.  That was easy…I just cut the casserole a little smaller!  But the best memories were the relationships with the students.  It was a unique and memorable time in all of our lives.”  – Katrina Little Bowers, ’84 BSHE

“The memory that stands out most is the Year of Panty raids at the University.  We were alerted by the A&P store manager with whom we were well acquainted.  The big night found us barricaded upstairs in our bedrooms with chest of drawers in front of the doors..Naturally most of the raiders went to dorms where the action was, but never the less we were prepared.  Our director, Matilda Callaway, loved to soak in a Bubble Bath and she was in process, when we decided we'd best inform her what was about to happen. I can't recall her reaction, but think she joined us upstairs, to wait it out, which turned out to be nothing after all.” – Jean Morton Head, ’52 BSHE

"Learning to live in a new environment with a new roommate and being responsible for everything, was somewhat overwhelming.  The experience put all of the information from the various majors into practice, and developed organizational skills and confidence, that I'm sure we all feel today.  I remember my week of being responsible for the meal planning, shopping and table arrangements for an entire house of fellow students. My roommate was a petite girl from South Georgia who helped me get through this.   It was a big responsibility!  My winter term in the Home Management proved to be a snowy one, which was very unusual in those days!  I have wonderful memories of every year at UGA-it was hard work and plenty of fun.  There is no way you can go through life and not use the knowledge that this major gives.  Being confident in marriage and raising children is an essential skill.  Working as a Home Economist in Business was a very rewarding career." Michelle DeLong Myers, '72 BSHE

"My experiences in the Home Management House cemented my relationship with several of my roommates and our teaching assistant.  We have been friends now for nearly 30 years!  Those of us who had the opportunity to live in these houses have a history that few people will ever share.  Remember when you were on "low" budget, how creative you had to be to feed all the girls.  I remember going to the UGA dairy just up the street to purchase some of our groceries (we became addicted to the coffee ice cream).  Our house also had a Hawaiian dinner and we had so much fun cooking and decorating (again on a budget).  This was a wonderful quarter I will never forget."
