Development Guidelines
What service will students provide to individuals, organizations, schools, or other entities in the community?
This course syllabus and any material describing the service-learning project must include a detailed description of the actual service-related activities in which the students will be engaged. Service-learning should address and respond to an identified community need, and should be developed in collaboration with community partners. The activity description should include key information about the community partner, the university students' responsibilities, the training that will be provided, any supervision and by whom, and an indicator of how the learning experience will be evaluated.
Positive Example:
The students in EDUC 101 will be team-tutoring math in small groups for 2 hour segments once a week in an after school program for grades 6-8 that is coordinated by The Local Public School. This math tutoring service is being provided at the request of The Local Public School, which will provide in-class training and supervise the students when they are tutoring. The Local Public School will contribute to the evaluation university students' mastery of the course learning goals and the quality of the interactions with The Local Public School students.
Negative Example:
Students will volunteer as tutors for two hours each week at a local school.
