Development Guidelines
How will course options ensure that no student is required to participate in a service placement that creates a religious, political, and/or moral conflict for the student?
A statement should be included in the class syllabus clearly explaining that service-learning is a component of the course, but no student will be required to participate in a service-learning project that creates a religious, political, or moral conflict for that student.
Example Statement in Syllabus (service-learning not required):
Students will select from 3 different activities that contribute to the course learning goals. Two of these activities are service-learning activities; one is a more traditional research project. Students will have the option of participating in the activity that best suits their preferences. No student will be required to participate in any service-learning experience.
Example Statement in Syllabus (service-learning required):
Participating in a service-learning project is a required component of this course. Students will be assigned to a service-learning placement based on their rankings of the service-learning projects offered. Every effort will be made to match students with their top-choice project. No student is required to engage in a service-learning project that creates a religious, political, or moral conflict. Students who have a potential conflict are responsible for bringing that conflict to the attention of the instructor as early as possible so an alternate service-learning placement can be arranged.
