This weight control program offers lesson plans, Power Points, handouts, pre-made menus, recipes and a walking program that can help people control their weight, diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases. This program has been continuously updated with the newest information about methods for successfully achieving permanent weight loss through healthy eating, physical activity and behavior change.
Objectives
Participants will be able to
- Determine the appropriate calorie level to promote healthy weight control
- Follow a set of pre-made menus at that level
- Make permanent changes in food selection to reduce calorie, fat and sodium intake while increasing fiber-rich foods
- Make behavior changes that reduce overeating and encourage regular physical activity and positive attitudes
- Increase physical activity
- Reduce risk for chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
Description
- The curriculum has many different lessons on a variety of topics. It is designed for an adult population and is appropriate for those with pre-diabetes and diabetes.
- Each lesson plan features a Power Point presentation with an embedded script, colorful handouts, discussion questions and a recipe.
- Most of the lessons last from 15-40 minutes. Participants then can walk together or do some other physical activity if desired.
- The “Walk-and-Talk” questions can be discussed during the exercise session or used as review questions at the next session.
- The recipe can be demonstrated or just distributed.
- Walk-a-Weigh received the Second Place National Award for Educational Curriculum Packages from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
