Keep Your Home Contaminant Free: Protect From Mercury
Mercury is a naturally occurring element that can be found in consumer products like thermostats and compact fluorescent lights (CFL).
Mercury Thermostats
Mercury thermostats are unlikely to break or leak mercury while is use; however, they need to be properly disposed of when being replaced. To dispose of it, take the thermostat to a state or local household hazardous waste collection center for recycling. You can also use Earth 911 to find collection programs near you.
Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL)
CFLs contain small amounts of mercury, none of which is released when the bulbs are intact (not broken) or in use. If the light breaks, mercury vapor is released. The total amount of mercury released when a light breaks is small. Follow the guidelines posted on the EPA website for cleaning up broken bulbs.
