The College of Family and Consumer Sciences, of which the Department of Foods and Nutrition is part, includes three other departments: Child and Family Development; Textiles, Merchandising and Interiors; and Housing and Consumer Economics. One of the best computer centers at The University of Georgia is maintained in the College, making the latest computer technology available to students. The Boyd Graduate Study Research Center houses the Graduate School and the Science Library, one of the most highly ranked research libraries in the Southeast.
The University of Georgia is located in Athens, Georgia, a community with an urban area population of approximately 100,000. The University is situated about 65 miles east of Atlanta and is easily accessible by major highways. The University of Georgia is the flagship campus of the state's University System which is comprised of 34 institutions, including other major universities such as the Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University in Atlanta, and the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
The University of Georgia has 2,000 faculty in 13 colleges and schools with more than 24,000 undergraduate students and 6,000 graduate students. The main campus, located on the edge of downtown Athens, covers 605 acres in Athens-Clarke County. Chartered in 1785, The University of Georgia is the nation's oldest Land-Grant State University with a rich tradition of excellence in its undergraduate and graduate programs. Based on 1997 figures, UGA ranked 31st in the nation in research expenditures, according to the National Science Foundation. In FY99, UGA research expenditures totaled $237 million. Among universities that have neither medicine nor comprehensive engineering schools, UGA ranks first in the nation in total funding for research and development. Seven internationally known authorities have joined the faculty as eminent scholars under the Georgia Research Alliance. The GRA — a consortium of state government, private industry and six Georgia universities — provides funding for leading scientists and scholars whose research and development work will benefit the state’s economy. One of these scholars, Dr. Clifton A. Baile, is a member of the Department of Foods and Nutrition and conducts research in the molecular bases of energy balance regulation and growth.
The University offers a variety of athletic, recreational and cultural activities for students and faculty. Buoyed by four national championships and four Top 10 finishes, UGA placed second in the 1998-99 Sears Directors’ Cup, the University’s highest ranking ever in the competition to determine the nation’s top overall athletic programs. Leading the way were national championships in women’s gymnastics, women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis and men’s golf. UGA’s Redcoat Band received the Sudler Trophy in 2000. Presented by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, the Sudler Trophy is the highest honor awarded to a college marching band. Students may choose from a large selection of recreational activities, including intramural sports, and cultural activities offered through the School of Music and Department of Drama. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is located two miles south of the main campus and is a 293-acre forest offering walking trails, horticultural exhibits and educational programs. The 425,000-square food Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities Center is the largest campus-based center of its kind in the country.
