From 1940 until the spring of 1985 the home management house provided practical experiences for students in applying the concepts and skills they had learned in courses in foods, nutrition, housing, family relations, clothing and textiles, budgeting, and time management.
“Oh, we didn’t mind living in the house, because it was what everyone did their last quarter of college,” Jean Morton Head, ’52 BSHE recalled. “There were some tasks I’d like to forget, like ironing those linen napkins, but there were a lot of things I learned that have stayed with me.”
“I’ll never forget when it was my week to do the grocery shopping,” said Harriette Kirk Bohannon, ’74 BSHE. “My budget was $25 and even in 1974 I had to be very creative with my dollars.”
Whether you loved it or dreaded it – the home management house requirement made an impact. While it is no longer part of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum, it is still an important part of our history that we are trying to document. Will you help?
