Visual Identity Guidelines – January 2012
For the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences
I. Introduction
The mission of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences is to advance the well-being of individuals and families over their life span and strengthen communities through the generation and dissemination of knowledge, education of professionals, and provision of research-based programs. One of the ways we communicate our mission across the University of Georgia, as well as to a variety of external audiences is through the use of uniform visual guidelines.
By developing a consistent visual image that is used by all of our college’s departments and institutes, we enhance our connections with both the University of Georgia and the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. We have tried to make these guidelines as easy to follow as possible. All of the college’s logos are available on the official logo page in multiple formats, which should make it easy to use them effectively as well as correctly.
II. Structure
The College of Family and Consumer Sciences logo incorporates up to five graphic elements: The UGA arch; the words “University of Georgia;” the words, “College of Family and Consumer Sciences;” the acronym “FACS;” and, when appropriate, the department or institute name.
The University of Georgia must be identified on the front cover of all printed materials produced by and in conjunction with the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. It is the preference of the college administration that the FACS logo be the primary identifier of the college, however, versions of the “classic” UGA logo with and without the college name are also acceptable. With the exception of FACS Cooperative Extension materials, which will continue to follow Extension guidelines, the choices available to you:
1. Preferred college logo
2. Preferred college logo with department name

3. Centered version – acceptable for all uses
4. Centered version with departmental name – acceptable for all uses

5. University of Georgia logo – allowable

6. University of Georgia logo with college name – allowable

III. Formats, Proportions and Colors
FACS logos are available on the website in two formats – EPS, which should be used in all printed materials including PowerPoint posters that will be printed; and PNG, which should be used for web-based materials. JPG and TIFF versions are not included because neither of these formats is scalable—they become “pixilated” when they are enlarged. If you encounter any difficulties using the EPS or PNG versions, please contact Denise Horton, Jimmy Hanson or Casey Gordon for help.
Most word processing and graphic applications allow you to change the size of photos, logos and other items on a page. Care must be taken to maintain the proportions of the FACS and UGA logos. To avoid distorting a logo, enlarge or reduce it by clicking on a corner of the logo. If a logo becomes distorted, it is best to delete it and re-insert the image. (Squeezing logos to fit within a particular space is not acceptable!)
In most instances, the FACS logo should be used with the half-circle in red, as shown above. When a publication is created using only black ink, it is acceptable to use the logo in black. If a logo is reversed, it will be all white. The website contains logos in all of these variations.
IV. Alternate Merchandise Logo
An alternate logo has been designed for restricted and specific situations where the preferred logo will not fit. You must seek approval from the director of communications prior to using this version each and every time you have need for the alternate merchandise logo.
V. Future Print Products
In order to make use of the FACS logo as easy as possible, efforts are under way to create templates for a variety of uses including: PowerPoint projects; postcards; invitations; name tags; and recruiting materials. As these templates come available, you will be notified how to download them.
If you have any questions regarding use of the FACS logo or the UGA logo, please contact Denise Horton, director of communications, at dhorton@uga.edu or 706-542-8014.
Thank you for your help in promoting the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the University of Georgia through consistent use of our new visual identity!
