FACS Sweeps Gamma Sigma Delta Awards

The 2010 Gamma Sigma Delta Awards for the UGA chapter have been announced, and Family and Consumer Sciences’ faculty swept the awards by winning an impressive 5 out of the 6 awards.
Junior Research: Dr. Jung Sun Lee (Family and Consumer Sciences)
Senior Research: Dr Mary Ann Johnson (Family and Consumer Sciences)
Senior Teaching: Dr. Richard Lewis (Family and Consumer Sciences)
Junior Extension: Dr. Ted Futris (Family and Consumer Sciences)
Senior Extension: Dr. Elizabeth Andress (Family and Consumer Sciences)
Gamma Sigma Delta is an organization having as its objectives the advancement of agriculture in all its phases, the maintenance and improvement of the relations of agriculture and related sciences to other industries, and the recognition of the responsibilities of those engaged in all aspects of agriculture to humankind.

FACS Specialist Receives Designation of Certified HACCP Manager

Elizabeth Andress, Extension Food Safety Specialist and Professor in Foods and Nutrition, recently received the designation of Certified HACCP Manager. She attended a workshop on March 23 based on the National Environmental Health Association course, HACCP: Managing Food Safety Hazards at the Retail Level, which is accredited by the International HACCP Alliance, and passed the NEHA/Prometric Certified HACCP Manager examination. Many regulatory authorities, including the Georgia Department of Community Health, Division of Public Health, are now requiring HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) plans to be generated for some foodservice situations. Dr. Andress already serves on the Georgia Foodservice Technical Review Advisory Committee for HACCP plans and variance requests.
