graduationFACS Convocation Dates:
Fall 2009: The College will hold it's convocation on Friday, December 18, 2009 at noon or 30 minutes following the UGA -wide commencement at the Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall, UGA Performing Arts Center.

Although we have been able to accommodate all of our guests, we have been asked to issue tickets to guests attending the FACS convocation.  Participating graduation candidates must let us know by Friday, December 4th how many tickets they need.  While we hope to accommodate everyone, tickets are subject to availability.  Students will pickup tickets from the Dean's Office, beginning December 8th - December 11th.  Any tickets not picked up by that day will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at Hodgson Hall prior to convocation.

What Undergraduate Candidates Need to Do and Know

  • Make an appointment with your advisor for a graduation check.
  • Check your degree audit report (DARS) for your “Tentative Graduation Date.”
  • You will receive invitations to attend two commencement ceremonies – one from UGA and the other from the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.
    • The UGA ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Stegeman Coliseum. UGA will print your name in a program. Each school or college will be recognized as a unit during the ceremony.
    • FACS Convocation will begin at noon or 30 minutes after the completion of the UGA ceremony. The FACS Convocation recognizes each candidate individually by having the candidates walk across the stage at the Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall and receive a gift from the FACS Alumni Association.  Academic regalia (cap and gown) is required to participate. Family members are encouraged to take photos during this ceremony. Parking is available at the Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall, UGA Performing Arts Center.
  • Attendance at either ceremony is not required, but thirty minutes is allowed between ceremonies to encourage your participation in both ceremonies.
  • UGA Commencement information will come from the Registrar's Office.
  • FACS Convocation information will be mailed to your local address. If you do not receive this information by November 30, 2009 and are anticipating graduating this December, contact Student Services, 706-542-4847, immediately.

    • Commencement invitations may be ordered from the bookstore. You will need to provide them with the name of your degree: B.S.F.C.S. – Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences.
    • Caps and gowns may be ordered at the bookstore. Your tassel color should be maroon unless you are graduating with academic honors.  Honor graduates’ tassels are a combination of red, black and silver. The Bookstore will have a list of students receiving honor status.
  • Diplomas will be mailed approximately 6 weeks after Commencement.

FAQ for UGA Commencement

Invitations:
Invitations, diploma frames, and other commemorative items are available at the UGA Bookstore.

Academic Attire:
Appropriate academic regalia must be worn to participate in the Commencement Ceremony. Caps, gowns and hoods may be purchased at the UGA Bookstore. Contact the University of Georgia Bookstore at 706.542.3171 for purchasing information. Order your announcements online at Jostens.com.

Candidates should wear their tassels over the right eye until the degree is awarded and over the left eye afterward. The mortarboard on the cap should be parallel to the ground.

Graduation with Honors (undergraduates only):
Criteria for graduation with honors are determined by the Educational Affairs Committee of the University Council and are described in the undergraduate bulletin.

Final honors designations for Summa, Magna, and Cum Laude as noted on the diploma and transcript will be based on the overall averages of 3.90, 3.70, and 3.50 respectively. Overall averages include grades at UGA as well as grades received at all previous academic institutions. To allow for current term grades, calculations for honors tassels and the commencement program only are based upon a current overall GPA of 3.85 for Summa Cum Laude, 3.65 for Magna Cum Laude, and 3.45 for Cum Laude. A list of potential honorees is provided to the UGA Bookstore.

Undergraduate students graduating with honors wear an honors tassel:

  • Summa Cum Laude: red, silver, and black tassel
  • Magna Cum Laude: red and silver tassel
  • Cum Laude: red and black tassel

Undergraduate Students Needing Handicap Access to Participate in the Ceremony:                                                   Please contact Jeremy Gray at jrlg1@uga.edu

Commencement Programs:
Two versions of the commencement program are printed. The longer version includes the names of all candidates. Two copies of this program will be placed in the seats for each of the candidates. Visitors will receive an abbreviated program containing information about the ceremony. Extra copies of the longer version are normally available after the ceremony. Please do not disrupt the ceremony by taking copies of the longer version from unoccupied seats during the ceremony.

The Academic Procession:
Assembly for the academic procession will begin at 8:30 am. Please be prompt.

Children will not be allowed to accompany a graduation candidate in the procession. Please arrange for children to be accompanied by a responsible adult to sit with them in the visitors’ seating. Cell phones must be turned off during the ceremony.

Recognition of Candidates:
As their names are called during the ceremony, candidates for doctorates, specialists and master’s degrees will move from their seats and walk across the stage. Doctoral candidates will be hooded on the stage. Undergraduates will rise as a group when their degree is conferred.

Conclusion of Ceremony:
Following the singing of the Alma Mater at the conclusion of the graduation ceremony, the platform party and the faculty will retire. There will be no formal recessional.

Diplomas:
Once final grades for all spring classes are received, each individual school, college and the Graduate School reviews the records of each candidate for graduation to verify that all requirements have been met. The Office of the Registrar is notified when this process is complete and authorizes the printing of the diplomas. Diplomas are mailed to graduates at their permanent or diploma addresses within four to six weeks. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the Office of the Registrar has the correct mailing address.

Undergraduates with one major:
Your degree, major, University honors, and graduation date will be reflected on the diploma.

Undergraduates with multiple majors:

  • If you complete the requirements for multiple majors, with the same degree, simultaneously, you will receive one diploma reflecting the degree, multiple majors, University honors, and graduation date.
  • If you complete the requirements for multiple majors with different degrees, simultaneously, you will receive two diplomas. Each diploma will reflect the respective degree, major, University honors, and graduation date.
  • If you complete the requirements for multiple majors during different semesters, you will receive a diploma for each. The individual diplomas will reflect the degree, major, University honors, and the graduation date corresponding to the major.
