Postmodern styles of the 1990s borrowed from many overlapping and frequently contradictory aesthetics, and were often labeled as “anti-fashion.” During the mid-nineties, simple feminine garments such as baby doll dresses were often paired with harder accessories, such as chunky boots and choker style necklaces.
Subculture “tribes” such as punk, goth, and grunge influenced fashion design while hip-hop music fans adopted “urban” fashions. Vintage clothing and historically inspired styles also experienced a revival. A definite 1970s trend arose, popularized by bell bottoms, hip huggers, and platform shoes.
The nineties were also characterized by a relaxed, casual look that dominated American fashion. Casual dress increased in the workplace and garment layering became a common practice. Minimalism was key—popularizing neutral, often darker tones with clean lines and little ornamentation. Black was considered the “color of the decade”.
Overall, a wide variety of clothing styles were being worn at this time and the fashion cycle was turning over at a more rapid rate than ever. Trousers, cargo pants, and blue jeans were commonly worn by both sexes. Athletic sportswear was increasingly incorporated into everyday wear and became part of the relaxed look. Young girls wore cropped pants and mini skirts, along with baby-tees and tank tops that revealed the midriff. Popular accessories included technology such as cell-phones and pagers, as well as a wide variety of hair accessories, pashmina scarves, and white gold and platinum jewelry. High heels, wedges, sandals, platforms and athletic shoes were commonly worn.
