The curriculum in the Furnishings and Interiors major focuses on residential environments. The major is a rigorous program of study designed for students who are serious about design. Courses impart design skills and knowledge in areas including: design fundamentals; oral, written and graphic communication; illustration and presentation methods; computer-aided drawing; 3-D computer modeling and rendering; residential-oriented design studios; kitchen and bath design; interior materials and finishes; textile end-use and performance; building systems and construction; lighting design; analysis, specification and estimation of materials and furnishings; historic architecture, interiors and furnishings; and professional practices. Furnishings and Interiors majors must also complete the following prerequisites for major required courses: Statistics, Elementary Chemistry/Chemistry lab, Introduction to Public Speaking, and other courses.  Please see the program of study sheet for this major for a complete listiing of required courses.

Speakers, field trips and study tours give students contact with professional interior designers as well as the home furnishings industry. In the spring of 2008 the program moved into a newly renovated facility (Barrow Hall) that houses multiple studios, CAD labs, resources room, faculty offices, and student lounge.  The program recently obtained National Kitchen and Bath Association accreditation, making it the only program in the state with this designation.

Guest speakers, field trips and study tours provide students with opportunities to network with business and industry professionals. Qualified students may gain additional professional experiences through an internship.

The New York City Study Tour gives students the opportunity to visit industry showrooms, retailers, and auxilliary services related to Fashion Merchandising and Furnishings and Interiors (with a focus on residential design). This study tour is offered each Maymester.

The College of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a 6 - week internship program in London every summer.  This is an exciting opportunity to intern in one of the world's leading financialcenters and learn first-hand what it is like living and working in a large international city.  FI students intern in local residential design firms, showrooms, and other businesses related to residential inteiors.

For more information on the London, China/Hong Kong or New York City study programs visit the Office of Student Services, Dawson Hall or contact Nicki Sauls at nsauls@fcs.uga.edu.

Student Interior Design Assocation (SIDA)

The Student Interior Design Assocation (SIDA) includes student chapters of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), International Interior Design Association (IIDA), and the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). Students may choose to join one or all of the student chapters. SIDA holds meetings on the first Tuesday of each month to promote professional development and interaction between students, faculty and industry professionals.

Guests Speakers for the meetings are brought in from the industry to give students a broad understanding of career options as well as to highlight special topics in interior design.  The organization also includes a mentorship program where upperclassmen are paired with lowerclassmen to provide support and encouragement.  In addition to the monthly meetings, SIDA also organizes field trips and coordinates to attend the quarterly Furnishings and Interiors alumni association meetings, Designing Dawgs.
